Clinical Herbalism Internship

February 5- June 24, 2008
5-month, 150-hour internship for advanced students; practical application in free herb clinic.

Tuesdays, 6-9 pm
2 Saturdays each month, 10am-5pm 

This class is designed for the seasoned student of Herbalism that desires to study in a clinical setting. ASHH has teamed with The Blue Ridge School of Herbal Medicine to offer students the supervision in which to learn how to educate people on the various ways herbs can enhance their lives. This 5-month, 150-hour internship begins with intensive lectures that prepare the student to meet with clients and address their health concerns.  Herbalists will acquire the experience and confidence to enable them to initiate a successful clinical career. It is a unique and rare opportunity to further one’s knowledge while serving the community.

20 hours- Human Sciences

  • Anatomy

  • Medical Terminology

20 hours- Materia Medica/ Therapeutic Herbalism

  • Botanical name/ Plant families
  • Parts used
  • Harvestable status
  • Dosages and dosage forms

  • Indications/contraindications/cautions                                                  
  • Energetics- drawing from diverse traditions of healing

12 hours- Pharmacognosy

  • Plant chemistry and Pharmacology
  • Herbal Formulation
  • Medicine making
  • Administration
  • Maintaining an apothecary
  • Laws regarding labeling and dispensing
  • Herb- drug interactions

6 hours- Eastern Constitutional Diagnostics

  • 5 Element theory
  • Ayurveda & the 3 Doshas
  • Tongue & Pulse Diagnosis

3 hours- Clinical Nutrition                                                                                                               

  • Acid/alkaline balancing                                                                                                            
  • Essential fatty acids                            
  • Mineral deficiencies

15 hours- Clinical Skills

  • Intake skills and record keeping

15 hours- Herbal Livelihoods

The remainder of the course will be spent in ASHH’s free herbal clinic.  Students will begin by observing CoreyPine Shane, clinical herbalist  of over 10 years and director of BRSHM, in consultations. Students will then interview clients with the aid of the instructor and classmates. Next, students will be assigned clients to do follow-up consultations with and share their findings with the class. Lastly, students will meet clients on their own time and discuss their experience in classroom roundtables.  
Students will be required to commit several hours to home study assignments and complete a project in the community.

Class size is very limited to ensure intimacy; students interviewed in order of application.

Tutition: $1500
